A New Era in the Indies

In the days before the NWA assumed control over pro wrestling, it was not uncommon for champions to carry and defend their titles from territory to territory. It was also not uncommon for promoters to attempt and double-cross those champions, sending a shooter into the ring to try and take that title by force. In those days, a wise promoter made sure he had a man who could defend himself holding that belt at all times. Nothing worse than sending your champion into another territory on a handshake deal, only to have him come home disgraced – and empty-handed.

In December of 2016 Mr. Darius Carter made it known that he intended to defend his newly won Tier 1 Wrestling title everywhere he could, around the US and even around the world. he’s not alone. New alliances and new handshake deals are making possible the kinds of matches that haven’t been seen in decades.

Louisville area fans will get their chance to see such a match in two weeks, when Chase Owens brings the Smoky Mountain Southeastern Heavyweight Championship against Matt Cage on March 10 at Pro Wrestling Freedom: Deception in Jeffersonville. One would hope these two competitors will do battle in a manner worthy of such a title, but in the pro wrestling business… you never can tell.

It’s a new era in independent wrestling. More and more of these cross-promotional title matches are taking place. They more they get booked, the more likely someone, somewhere will attempt to pull a screw job.

What’s old is new again in pro wrestling. As a new WWE Hall of Famer once said, “That’s not a bad thing. That’s a good thing!”

A Dangerous Book in the Wrong Hands!

Fans of Tier 1, and wrestling fans everywhere, I am sorry.

I have done a terrible thing.

After hearing Mr. Darius Carter, the current Tier 1 Wresting Champion on the Kick Out at Two Podcast, I got in touch with him to tell him how much I enjoyed the interview and admired his appreciation for wrestling history. I shared with him the books I had written, and I offered to send him a few if he wanted to have a look. Mr. Carter thanked me for the offer and asked for a copy of a biography, Lord Carlton.

Mr. Carter seemed like such a nice man, and he was so gracious to me on email. I had no idea Mr. Carter was one of the most dastardly villains on the East Coast. Now, with the biography of one of the most hated and reviled villains of the 1950s in his possession, I fear I might have only made things worse.

Lord Carlton was a monster. Sure, he dressed nice and conducted himself with the grace of a gentleman, but he as nasty as they came. Like Mr. Carter, Carlton was not a “sports entertainer, nor was he the kind of guy who “wanted to get his spots in.” He believed in winning at any cost, and there was no low too low for him to stoop.

Will Mr. Carter adopt some of Lord Carlton’s dirty deeds as his own? Will he follow Carlton’s lead by traveling to the far east to pick up a sinister Swami to assist him in his conquests? Whatever happens, I take full responsibility.

Best of 2016 with Mr. Darius Carter

If you missed the last Kick Out at Two Podcast of 2016, go back and download it now. Mr. Darius Carter is the current Tier 1 Champion, and he is exactly the kind of wrestler we need to restore true greatness to the industry. He has an enormous respect for the history of the wrestling business, and he’s determined to bring back a lot of what’s been lost the last few decades.

Mr. Carter shared this introduction for his best match of 2016:

“This match took place at Warriors of Wrestling’s 100th Show, and was the 4th Defense of my No Limits Championship. It’s no secret to those familiar with me that I’m big on making history, and to say I was able to defend my title – which I would hold for 366 Days – at this promotion’s 100th show ever is a major deal to me. A fair amount of promotions these days seem to struggle making it to 10 consecutive monthly shows, let alone 100, and to have been a contributor to WOW’s continued success means I am doing my job properly. As reputable as WOW has become in their near-decade of running, I want that same reputability for myself as well. Taking part in matches like this, on shows like this, is the pathway to that & none of it can ever be taken away; THIS is what building a legacy is all about.

Best of 2016 with Righteous Jesse

The Kick Out at Two Podcast released their final episode of the year today, an interview with Tier 1 Champion Darius Carter! If you haven’t already subscribed, you can find Kick Out at Two on iTunes, Soundcloud, and Stitcher.

Righteous Jesse was also happy to chime in with his favorite match of 2016, Brett Ison vs. Lee Byford:

This match is a favorite of mine for a few reasons- 1. It’s no secret that Brett Ison is my best friend. Getting to see my best friend wrestle in another state for another promotion and get a positive response from the crowd was such a great feeling. 2. It’s Brett Ison vs Lee Byford. If you aren’t familiar with these two they’ve been rivals and partners. I knew this would be a knock down, drag out fight. I was 200% right. These two men gave it everything they had and captured the crowds attention. The match took place at Atlanta Wrestling Entertainment at Famous Pub. I highly recommend this match to anyone who might doubt that strong style has a place in the south.

While You Were Complaining…

While you were complaining about Sasha Banks losing her title so soon, Marc Hauss was standing up for the women’s wrestling revolution in the indies.

While you were complaining that your favorite guys never get pushed because “politics,” a your other favorite guys – Aron Rex/Damien Sandow, Cody Rhodes, and The Big Guy/Ryback – began their takeover of the indies.

While you were complaining about about the promotion that you routinely pay $9.99 a month to watch, CZW, High Spots, CHIKARA, Rockstar Pro, and others have tried to offer you alternatives – some for less, some for free!

While you were complaining about an ugly title belt, Matt Hardy was busy blowing up the Internet by deleting his own brother.

And lest we forget, you could have been enjoying an independent show where a ticket and a T-shirt costs less than an upper level ticket you complained about buying for the so-called “only” promotion left.

It almost makes you wonder: do the people who complain incessantly about title belts and ticket prices more in love with wrestling or whining?

If you answered wrestling, prove it. Stop complaining and take action. Put your money where your mouth is.

I’m not telling you to cancel your $9.99 subscription. As good as NXT and the CWC have been, you’d be a fool to back out now. But I am telling you to go see a local show, or subscribe to a second network, or look around Youtube and discover what’s out there to watch for free. If even a fraction of the whiners would invest just a few dollars a month in independent wrestling, we might really change the landscape of pro wrestling today.

Support what you love. Stop complaining about what you hate. Prove that you’re a fan and not just a whiner. Let’s pour some fuel on the fire if this indy revolution.
